A passionate and hard-hitting discussion about mental health services from a woman who literally seen it all on The Nutters Club this week.
From Kings Cross dominatrix to Wearable Arts Awards winner via dyslexia and a diagnosis of schizophrenia, Susie is one of life’s real characters, and she didn’t hold back when it came to her views of New Zealand’s mental health services.
“Some Nutters Club episodes come to life in unexpected ways, and inviting Susie Crooks to be our guest was a sure way to liven things up in the studio,” says series director Marcus Clayton. View replay here
“Her unique take on life and her passionate debate with the Mike and the Doc on the current state of mental health care in this country really made us all sit-up and take notice. Here was a woman with wit and flair and an unashamedly open attitude about the difficulties she has faced in her life telling the ‘normals’ what is wrong with the system – not bad for someone who hears voices.”
And nobody knows it like someone who has been there themselves. Susie is passionate about creating better understanding and care for those living with mental health issues.
“The Nutters Club is a great opportunity to say it like it is. One day we will understand and value the experience of madness, one day we will treat people with love and kindness but sadly I fear that day may be a long way off. I am proud to be involved with the courageous people from The Nutters Club.”
