Eddie Rakanui: Breaking the Cycle

Eddie Rakanui: Breaking the Cycle

On this weeks episode of The Nutters Club, Eddie Rakanui recounted a childhood marked by love, but also by domestic violence and alcohol abuse. Growing up in Wellington, he described being an energetic and often troubled teenager whose behavior at school reflected the turmoil unfolding at home. Despite loving school, he admitted he frequently found himself in trouble, drinking from an early age and struggling to balance education with a difficult family environment.

The most powerful moment came as Eddie recalled a violent confrontation with his father following disappointing School Certificate results. After years of enduring abuse, he finally stood up for himself, an act that ultimately led to police involvement and court proceedings. He spoke candidly about the emotional toll of testifying against his own father and the pain of being cross-examined, while also describing how the experience fundamentally changed the balance of power in their relationship.

Rather than allowing that trauma to define him, Eddie explained how a court-recommended Outward Bound course became a turning point. The experience helped him reflect, rebuild his confidence and eventually reconnect with his father on healthier terms. He was careful not to condemn his father's parenting entirely, acknowledging the generational patterns of violence and limited emotional tools that shaped earlier generations.

Today, Eddie is determined that the cycle ends with him. As the father of four children, he described a home built on openness, honesty and conversation, where no subject is off limits. From discussing mental health and relationships to supporting his daughters through everyday milestones, he believes transparency has created trust
